An acquired brain injury (ABI) is defined as damage to the brain which occurs after birth and is not the result of a congenital disorder or a degenerative disease. The brain damage may be due to a traumatic head injury or by conditions such as anoxia or infection.
Common causes of brain injuries include trauma such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Other brain injuries are caused by internal events such as cerebral vascular accidents, aneurysm or infections of the brain.
